About actuaries in general insurance

General insurance products include personal lines, such as motor and home, and commercial lines like liability and workers' compensation.

Actuaries are involved in various aspects of general insurance, including reserving, pricing and product design, auditing, capital and risk management. 

General insurance actuaries draw on skills, including data analytics, to create projection models and evaluate risks. They can also be involved in technical work or advisory roles to management and boards, including regulatory roles and setting provisions for future claims, including those arising from weather peril events.

Approximately 40% of Australian actuaries are employed in general insurance.
