Practical experience requirement

Our Associate (AIAA) and Fellow (FIAA) qualifications each require a minimum of one year of practical experience. You’ll work in an actuarial role while you study remotely with us.

About practical experience requirements

To qualify as an Associate or Fellow, you need to complete a minimum period of practical experience. By working while you study, you’ll focus your skills on real-life situations, learn to communicate effectively, work with key internal and external stakeholders and lead people and functions.

What is my practical experience requirement?

Associates

To achieve the Associate designation, you need to have completed and passed the Foundation Program, four Actuary Program subjects and have completed one year in a supervised, relevant work environment.

Fellows

Once you complete the Actuary Program, you can enter the Fellowship Program. You must pass three Fellowship subjects to qualify (two Principles subjects plus one Applications subject) and complete one further year of supervised relevant work experience.

Started your studies before 2019?

If you began your studies prior to 2019, your practical experience require may differ depending on the transition arrangements and where you are in your progress through your qualification studies.

What qualifies as practical experience?

Practical experience involves applying your actuarial skills in professional settings. We recognise a wide range of work environments for gaining experience toward the practical experience requirement, which may include technical skills, problem-solving, model development, analysis, communication and professionalism. Examples of qualifying work include:

  • Applying economic, financial or statistical principles to solve professional problems.
  • Addressing financial impacts of uncertain events.
  • Working in financial services, such as insurance, superannuation, banking or investments.
  • Using actuarial skills in fields like health, energy, climate, environmental analysis, mining pricing models or academia.

You can start counting experience from the date you begin eligible work after starting approved actuarial studies. There’s no need to register, but you must submit a manager-signed form at the end of each year.
