Alternative qualification pathways
Not studying an accredited degree? Or pursuing a career change? We offer many alternative routes to become a qualified actuary.

Qualification pathway for ‘allied’ university study
If you did maths, finance, economics or business at university, your subjects may have covered some of the content from an actuarial degree. You can apply to have this study recognised by the Institute via allied study ‘exemptions’. If you can prove your previous study has covered the same content, you’ll be ‘exempt’ from doing these subjects again in our Foundation Program.
To qualify this way, you’ll still need to complete all other remaining Foundation or Actuary Program subjects in our qualification programs by:
- Enrolling in these subjects at an accredited university as ‘non-award study’.
- Or, by becoming a General Member and enrolling with us to complete Foundation exams through the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA).

Qualification pathway for no relevant study or no exemptions
If you haven’t completed any relevant university study, you’ll need to complete all your qualification program subjects remotely by enrolling to study with us. To enrol, you’ll first need to become an Actuaries Institute General Member.
During the Foundation Program, you’ll complete Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) exams.
You’ll complete Actuary and Fellowship Program subjects via accredited universities as ‘non-award study’, and the Actuaries Institute.
