Actuary Program

Expand your technical skills and learn what it takes to be a professional actuary. Graduating as an Associate (AIAA) means you’ll be a trusted business advisor, familiar with the actuarial control cycle, and an effective communicator.

Overview

You’ll study four Actuary Program subjects; two at an accredited university and two online with us. At the same time, you’ll also complete a year of practical experience. We offer two 16-week semesters annually, with all teaching and assessments online. You'll be taught by our dedicated educators, with tutorials and guest speaker presentations delivered live and on-demand.

Study duration

It takes one year on average to complete the final two subjects of the Actuary Program [Communication, Modelling and Professionalism (CMP) and Asset Liability Management (ALM)].

Prerequisites

You must have attempted the Foundation Program, the Actuarial Control Cycle (ACC) and the Data Science Principles (DSP) subject before studying the rest of the Actuary Program with us. However, you won’t be awarded the Actuary designation until you’ve passed your required subjects.

How to enrol

To enrol, you need to become a General Member and enrol directly with us. Enrolment for semester two is open from June each year.

Qualification received

After you complete the Foundation and Actuary Programs, and practical experience requirement, you're eligible for the Associate (AIAA) designation.

Experienced Associates hold roles such as:

After achieving the Associate designation, you can continue your studies and practical experience with the Fellowship Program. This program adds depth and specialisation and provides you the Fellow designation.

  • Apply the actuarial control cycle and actuarial principles to a range of commercial situations.
  • Analyse features and risks of financial products.
  • Apply risk assessment frameworks, valuation and pricing techniques. 
  • Monitor, assess and respond to emerging experience.

Data Science Principles (DSP)

You will learn to:

  • Prepare and understand data.
  • Select and apply predictive analytics techniques to solve regression and classification problems.
  • Evaluate and compare performance of different models. 
  • Contribute to all stages of a data science project across multiple industries or domains.

Communication, Modelling and Professionalism (CMP)

You will learn to:

  • Communicate with a range of audiences.
  • Deliver effective written reports and oral presentations.
  • Design, check and communicate a well-constructed model. 
  • Apply professionalism and ethics in decision making processes.

Prerequisites: Actuarial Control Cycle (ACC) and Data Science Principles (DSP).

Asset Liability Management (ALM)

You will learn to:

  • Discuss the characteristics of the principal investment classes and valuation assumptions.
  • Explain the operation of capital and money markets.
  • Critique theories of investment market behaviour. 
  • Apply the principles of the asset liability management framework.

It is recommended to attempt ACC before ALM.

Qualifying countries fee relief


The Actuaries Institute offers students in qualifying countries financial relief from Actuary Program enrolment fees for Actuaries Institute developed subjects. To qualify for fee relief students must:

  • Be a current full-time resident of, and working in, a qualified country.
  • Be personally paying for the course fees and not being reimbursed.
  • Have their salary paid in the local currency.

Students who qualify for fee relief pay 50% of the scheduled enrolment fee for an Actuary Program subject. To apply for Actuary Program Fee Relief , students should submit an Application for Actuary Program Fee Relief prior to enrolling in Actuary Program subjects. Further actuarial study and exemptions

If you’ve done any prior actuarial study before studying a qualification program with us, you may be eligible to claim exemptions. Exemptions show you’ve already completed certain parts of our programs. 

After achieving the Associate designation, you can opt to continue your studies with the  Fellowship Program . This program adds depth and specialisation and provides you the Fellow designation. 

Are you a risk actuary? Add to your skillset by choosing Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) as your principles subject for the Fellowship Program to attain the  CERA designation .
