Alice Xu Alice Xu

Alice is a risk and finance executive with extensive knowledge of the regulatory environment and operational risk and control practices in the financial services industry. Over the last 17 years, Alice has gained wide-ranging insurance experience across underwriting, pricing, reserving, capital management, portfolio management, finance, risk and strategy. 

Andrew Brown-bw Andrew Brown

Andrew is a director and co-founder of Adaptive Cultures. Adaptive Cultures has been recognised by senior executive and board levels as ‘turning around’ cultures, leadership behaviours and results,

helping leaders to make changes with a substantial positive impact on the wider organisation and community.

Andrew has worked extensively across the private and public sectors, including local government,university and state government sectors. He is currently programme host and facilitator for the Victorian Leadership Academy for E03 leadership programs.

Andrew’s passion is to support people to bring their innate compassion and wisdom into creating humane and impactful places to work. Andrew has been drawn to the work of building adaptive capacity, as he believes it is essential in order for our organisations, industries and communities to grow and thrive.

Andrew has held executive positions across the Asia Pacific region. These include Chief Actuary for AXA Life Singapore, Chief Financial Officer for Philippine AXA Life and Head of Learning and Leadership Development for AXA Asia Pacific Holdings. Andrew was previously a director for the Actuaries Institute (AI), and has also been a member of the global AXA Learning and Development Board.

Andrew Gale

Andrew Gale

Andrew is an actuary with over 20 years’ experience in the Australian health insurance industry.  He currently provides actuarial advice as an independent consultant.  He has previously held Chief Actuary roles for Medibank Private and AXA Health Insurance (now BUPA), where he was responsible for the appointed actuary functions and providing actuarial advice to the board and management. 

He has published papers and presented extensively on numerous private health insurance topics, including historical trends and developments, community rating, demutualisations and claims selection effects.  He also presents health lectures to actuarial students at the University of Melbourne. 

Bruce Thomson Bruce Thomson

Bruce has worked in middle management and as a consultant in life insurance, superannuation and funeral funds.

Valuing unlisted assets is always fun, and expert witness work can be enlightening. He has been an Institute marker, tutor and examiner for even longer than he was an Institute student.

Bruce has also been on charity Boards, and helps with local soccer.

Colin Priest
Colin Priest

Colin Priest is the VP, AI Strategy for DataRobot, where he advises businesses on how to build business cases and successfully manage data science projects. With more than three decades of experience in financial services, Colin has held a number of C-Suite roles, where he has championed data science initiatives in banking, fintech, insurance, risk management, and marketing. Colin is a public speaker and thought leader, and a firm believer in data-based decision making and applying automation to improve customer experience. He is passionate about how humans and AIs can work together, and is an advisor to the Singapore Government on AI ethics, AI governance, and the future of work. 

David Service

David Service

David has been active in investment strategy setting and portfolio construction and has been a member of many investment advisory committees over his career, including PNG Public Service Superannuation Funds, Swiss Re in Australia and Commonwealth Bank Financial Services. He has over 40 years’ experience as an Actuary and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. He holds a PhD from ANU on “Disability Income Insurance – The Australian Experience” and a Grad Cert in Higher Education.

He has been the course leader for the CAP course since its commencement in 2005.

Gaurav Khemka

Gaurav Khemka

Garry is a Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University where he teaches Actuarial Studies at the postgraduate level. Garry has been teaching the Commercial Actuarial Practice, Investments Course since 2017 after passing it in 2014. He holds a PhD from the ANU in Actuarial Studies and Statistics, a Master of Actuarial Studies and a Bachelor of Economics (Hons). Garry is also a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute (FIAA) and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA).

Garry’s research interests span the fields of Life Insurance and Superannuation. His main area of research is in numerical dynamic programming methods and their application in lifecycle models, and focuses on improving retirement outcomes under defined contribution pension plans for Australians.

 Vivian Dang

Vivian Dang

Vivian is an Actuary with over 10 years’ experience in superannuation consulting.  He is currently working as a Senior Consultant at MLC Wealth, and previously worked as a Consulting Actuary at The Heron Partnership and Russell Investments, providing actuarial and strategic advice to a wide range of superannuation funds and employers.  Vivian is a member of the Superannuation Practice Committee, the Life Insurance and Retirement Education Faculty and helped educate a generation of Part 3 superannuation students through course leader roles across the 6A, 6B and CAP subjects. 

Young Tan Young Tan

Young is the Manager of Actuarial & Research at UniSuper. Prior to joining UniSuper in 2016 as a Product Actuary, he was part of the Actuarial and Benefits Consulting team at Russell Investments (acquired by Willis Towers Watson) for 5 years. Young is also a member of the Actuaries Institute’s Superannuation, Projections and Disclosures (SPD) subcommittee.
