HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DO?

The future is always uncertain. That’s why actuaries have such an important role to play. Our mastery of data, ability to harvest its insights, and our commercial mindset, means we can help organisations, government, and communities with advice that drives change and solutions that work.

Add to all these skills a commitment to integrity, and an ability to balance competing interests, and it’s clear we have an important role to play.

A SHARED LANGUAGE

Research with members, organisations, and other stakeholders, consistently tell us our profession is poorly understood and the way we talk about ourselves is part of the problem.

As a profession, we need to get better at sharing our value. When people understand how we contribute, actuaries are offered bigger and better roles, the profession has  greater influence – and we get to work on truly important problems.

To cut through the noise, actuaries need a consistent story to tell.

The Institute wants to help you share your value. So, through a robust, research-driven process, we’re working on a new vocabulary, a shared language we can all use to speak about our profession.

This new vocabulary starts with a simple truth. Across every domain where actuaries excel, our research led us to this:  ACTUARIES USE DATA FOR GOOD.

WHERE DO YOU USE DATA FOR GOOD?

By talking to members, three key domains where actuaries make a difference were identified.

► C-Suite: shaping the strategic direction of an organisation to secure its future.

► Actuarial Data Lab: doing the deep work, whether it’s in established actuarial fields or emerging areas such as climate risk and data science.

Public Policy: contributing to conversations about equity, sustainability, and the direction of our society.

Some actuaries may choose to focus on one domain depending on where they are at in their career, others may work across all three.

Take the short interactive quiz below and find out what lights you up.

Whatever your preference, understanding these domains should give you an easy, true and shared language to explain what you do as an actuary. And, strengthen the profession.
