Treasury Consultation: Strengthening the superannuation performance test

The Institute's preferred long-term position is for the test to transition to one that better measures a product’s performance on a risk-adjusted basis. If a single-metric approach is retained, it should be a better-designed metric that addresses the key shortcomings of the current approach which focus on investment implementation performance.

Response to APRA consultation on National Claims and Policies Database (NCPD) non-confidentiality determination and refreshed publication format

The Institute supports APRA's proposals for the NCPD non-confidentiality determination and refreshed publication format, including the move to downloadable spreadsheets and the addition of cyber insurance and management liability as separate product categories

APRA Consultation: Proposed superannuation data collection to implement the Government’s Retirement Reporting Framework

We support the objective of the Retirement Reporting Framework to enhance transparency and strengthen retirement outcomes assessments. Actuaries play an important role in the design, monitoring and evaluation of retirement income strategies, and we welcome initiatives that support more evidence-based decision-making.

Treasury Consultation: Enhancing member protections in the superannuation system

We strongly support the objective of enhancing member protections. Our submission focuses on how protecting members’ retirement savings could be achieved most effectively.

Life Insurance Code of Practice Review - Interim Report Response

Our submission focuses on the questions raised in the Interim Report relating to mental health. The Code should support the industry to respond and adapt to evolving expectations in a way that balances accessibility of insurance with equity for the insured population as a whole.

NSW Planning: Consultation on NSW’s Climate Change and Natural Hazards SEPP

The Institute supports the SEPP’s overarching objective to “future‑proof” communities against climate‑amplified natural hazard risks (including coastal hazards, flooding, bushfires and urban heat) and sees this reform as a critical complement to strengthening the National Construction Code. We strongly recommend the SEPP adopt an explicit principle of “no new residential or other highly vulnerable development in high‑risk hazard zones”. This is not intended to preclude lower‑consequence uses in high‑risk hazard zones, where events do not result in major disruption or loss.

Treasury Consultation: Streamlining and modernising the National Construction Code

Housing affordability should consider not only the initial cost of construction but also ongoing energy costs and repair after major disasters (usually reflected in consumer cost through insurance premiums). There are many relatively low cost modifications to current building practices which simultaneously reduce energy and repair (insurance) costs which have high benefit to cost returns for homeowners, within short payback periods, supporting the goals of the proposed pause of changes to the NCC.
