A few weeks ago, while I was at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, I noticed a last-minute entrant on the program:

Puzzlers Assemble! Filmmakers are in Reel Trouble

Tucked away in a neglected greenroom which had been repurposed to store excess lighting equipment, I discovered a group of actuaries trying to resolve a missing piece in plans for a new movie: Actuary-Man 2. Which was more incredible? That they made a movie about an actuarial superhero, or that I had somehow missed the first one?!

Narration audio produced with ElevenLabs. You don't need to listen to the trailer to solve the puzzle — but it's worth a watch.

With the writer on an isolated ‘wellness’ holiday, this group had been tasked with figuring out what the subtitle of the movie is supposed to be. They were told it relates to film, actuarial, and this strip recovered from the cutting room floor.

A strip of film with blank frames, recovered from the cutting room floor.

None of us cracked it, so I am turning to my brains trust. Can you figure it out?

Think you’ve got the solution?

Submit the subtitle and an explanation of how you worked it out to [email protected] by Wednesday, 1 July 2026. Include whether you want your name or an alias published alongside the solution if you’re in the first 10 solvers. A randomly selected correct answer within the first 10 will receive a $50 voucher from the Actuaries Institute!

The solution will be revealed on 2 July 2026.
