FIT FOR THE FUTURE?

An Australia–UK Exchange on the Future of Healthcare Funding

Australia and the UK have taken different approaches to healthcare funding and delivery. Australia's mixed public and private system relies on private health insurance, while the UK's NHS plays a central role.

How can we ensure our healthcare funding models remain sustainable while delivering better outcomes for the people and systems they serve?

Purpose of the Exchange

Hear from the UK's NHS on its vision for the future and Australia's Department of Health, Disability and Ageing on national healthcare priorities.

Together, we will explore pressures and priorities and what each system can learn from the other.

A New Perspective for Actuaries

FROM focusing on financial performance and funding sustainability measurement.

TO assessing the value funding models create for the healthcare system.

TOWARDS shaping measures, incentives and funding approaches that improve system-wide outcomes.

Why Join?

Challenge how we define and measure success, identify opportunities for better alignment between funding and healthcare outcomes, and explore the role actuaries can play in designing systems fit for the future.

Are we optimising Private Health Insurance (PHI) parameters, or the value it delivers? Let's open the aperture.

The session will run as a hybrid event, with in-person watch parties at the Bupa Melbourne office and the Institute in Sydney, and an online option for those joining remotely. The evening kicks off with 30 minutes of networking, followed by the session from 5.30 – 7pm.

About the presenters
Paul McBride, Assistant Secretary, Private Health Strategy Branch at Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing
Paul has spent decades in senior policy and advisory roles across the Commonwealth Government, in roles ranging across the social security payment system, Housing, Superannuation, International tax, and the microeconomic reform of markets. Since November 2018 he has worked for the Commonwealth department of Health, initially in the Health Economics and Research function, then latter in Medical benefits, and Compliance. Since mid 2024 Paul has been responsible for Private Health Strategy.  With the viability of Private Hospitals in the spotlight, and a series of consultation papers being released on possible reforms both PHI and Private Hospital delivery of care there is much to discuss.
