This session will give a brief history of recent tropical cyclones that have affected more southerly parts of Australia, focusing on the effects of TC Seroja and TC Alfred. It will also outline the difference in building codes and standards in cyclone and non-cyclone areas of Australia.

About the presenter(s)
Dr. Bruce Buckley
Bruce is a senior meteorologist and climatologist with 47 years of experience. He has been involved in climate change research with IAG, Woodside Energy, Rio Tinto, and the Meat & Livestock Association of Australia. Bruce has co-authored five books and has numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications. He was also team meteorologist for the successful Australian and Japanese sailing teams at the London, Rio and Tokyo Olympics respectively. Bruce holds a PhD in Atmospheric Science from UNSW.
Kate Lyons
Kate Lyons is a reinsurance expert with an appreciation of the complexity of natural hazards risk and the challenges of climate change. She has been focused on the resilience and climate change advocacy for both Suncorp and industry bodies. Kate is chairing the Insurance Council of Australia’s Climate Action Committee and is now leading the Climate Change Research working group for the Actuaries Institute.
Zac Segger
Zac is the Senior Catastrophe Modeller, Pacific Region, at Guy Carpenter, working across weather and natural catastrophe risk. Recently moving from the role of Weather Risk Specialist within the Natural Perils team at IAG, where his work focused on integrating claims experience and environmental data into business relevant and accessible outputs. Prior to joining the insurance industry, Zac spent 12 years in the Royal Australian Navy as a Maritime Warfare Officer, later specialising as a Maritime Geospatial Officer with a focus on meteorology. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics from the Australian Defence Force Academy, a Graduate Diploma in Meteorology from the Bureau of Meteorology, and a Master of Actuarial Studies from the University of New South Wales. Zac is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, and his professional interests sit at the intersection of atmospheric science, actuarial modelling, and catastrophe risk.
