Rashi Bansal BT Financial Group

Rashi Bansal is currently the Chief Actuary, Head of Finance and Head of Life Insurance Regulatory Response at BT Financial Group. She is responsible for leading the actuarial and finance team across general insurance, life insurance and lenders mortgage insurance. Rashi has previously held the Appointed Actuary roles for Westpac’s general insurance and lenders mortgage insurance businesses. Prior to BT, Rashi spent 10 years at Pwc in actuarial consulting specialising in accident compensation. She has nearly 20 years experience in insurance across strategic and operational planning, reporting and analysis, financial control, capital management, statutory reporting and projects.

Anthony Tockar Verge Labs      

Anthony Tockar is director and cofounder at Verge Labs, a new type of AI company focused on the applied side of machine learning. A jack-of-all-trades, he has worked on problems across insurance, technology, telecommunications, loyalty, sports betting and even neuroscience. He achieved his FIAA with the Actuaries Institute, then moved into data science, completing an MS in Analytics at the prestigious Northwestern University. After hitting the headlines with his posts on data privacy at Neustar, he returned to Sydney to practice as a data scientist and cofounded the Minerva Collective, a not-for-profit focused on using data for social good, as well as multiple meetup groups. He also has continued his work in data privacy and is one of Australia's only certified Data Protection Officers. His key missions are to extend the reach and impact of data science to help people, and to assist Australian businesses to become more data driven.

Gavin Pearce icare    

Insurance & Care NSW (icare) was created on 1 September 2015 to deliver the State’s insurance and care schemes. Gavin joined icare in November 2015 as their inaugural Chief Risk Officer…although his LinkedIn profile says “Chief Risky Dude”.

Gavin is part of icare’s Executive Team and he manages the Risk & Governance area.

Prior to joining icare, Gavin was the Chief Risk Officer at Zurich Financial Services Australia Limited. Before moving to Sydney in 2008, Gavin spent eight years at the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) in New Zealand. The last role Gavin held at the ACC was Chief Actuary.

Gavin has a Masters degree in Statistics, an MBA from Henley Management College and a post graduate certificate in the Psychology or Risk. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA) and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

David Whittle

David Whittle Zurich

David Whittle has 30 years of experience in the insurance industry in a variety of business and actuarial roles.  He qualified as an actuary in 1994.  His career has spanned:

  • general and (a long time ago) life insurance
  • three different multinational insurers and three consulting firms
  • roles in reserving, pricing, underwriting and general management
  • nine countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Most recently, David was the Chief Reserving Actuary for Zurich’s Asia-Pacific general insurance businesses, spanning nine countries, from 2013 until October 2018.

Away from work, David’s enthusiasms include watching sport, reading about history and psephology.  He is married to Cathy and has two daughters.

Andrew Matthews Medibank Private

Andrew Matthews is an executive leader with experience in finance, actuarial and organisational development.  Andrew is currently Chief Actuary of Medibank Private Limited with responsibilities for governance, capital management and pricing. He has more than 25 years’ experience in financial services in roles including: as a Partner at Ernst & Young, in a range of leadership roles in actuarial practice across IAG and CGU Insurance, National Mutual, Trowbridge Consulting and the Transport Accident Commission.

Andrew passionately believes in connecting the commercial and the humanistic; the contemporary and the indigenous; and the diversity of teams to create an environment for growth.  He is a stroke survivor after experiencing a stroke in 2016 and now a Director of The Stroke Foundation.

Andrew holds a BCom from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Science (Organizational Development) from Pepperdine University in California, and Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries Australia. Mr Matthews is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and holds an accreditation in executive coaching.

Ashish is a Principal at Finity based in Sydney. He has worked with clients of all shapes and sizes – from domestic niche businesses to larger global players. He has delivered highly sophisticated analytics solutions that can be understood and operationalised for real world business value.

His recent work has been focused around building up Finity’s analytics capability, data partnerships and leading the development of Finity’s population segmentation data products.

Vincent Chen is a Senior Manager in EY Financial Services with over 11 years of industry experience. Together with his background in computer engineering, Vincent has a keen interest in technological innovations and analytics. Vincent has broad industry experiences including strategy, data system modernisation, business intelligence, analytics, product development and core actuarial including pricing and reserving. Vincent is driven by innovations that may solve challenges which insurers may face tomorrow.

Don Johnstone

Don Johnstone Deloitte  

Don is a Director at Deloitte. He has over 25 years of experience in financial services in Australia, USA and UK with an emphasis on general insurance. He previously worked at KPMG, IAG, Aon Re and Tillinghast. Don has experience in conduct risk and remediation relating to inappropriate financial services advice and mis-selling and has recently been helping QBE to define its appetite for conduct risk.

Outside of work Don can often be found paddling a surf ski on the beautiful lakes and rivers of NSW.

Scott is a Senior Actuary at Taylor Fry with over ten years’ general insurance consulting experience. He has worked with a range of insurers and regulators, and holds a number of appointed actuary roles.  Scott is a slow, but committed ocean swimmer.

Kitty Ho Munich Re      

Kitty started her career at PwC consulting clients for 5 years then moved into the world of reinsurance where she spent the last 10 years. During this time, she had worked in reserving, risk management, pricing and underwriting in Munich Re’s Sydney, Singapore and Germany offices. Currently, she is the Casualty Underwriting Manager steering and managing the Australian and New Zealand casualty portfolio and team. She is also an active Institute member, being part of the General Insurance Practice Committee, Actuaries Digital Committee and the General Insurance Seminar committee.

David Wan Suncorp   

David has worked across a range of actuarial areas at Suncorp over past 6 years. He’s currently leading the Corporate GI Valuation team with responsibilities spanning across result consolidation for the GI group, CHE and Risk Margin reviews and Asbestos Valuation. Previously, he’s worked on CTP valuation and pricing and Workers’ Compensation valuation. Outside of work, David enjoys board game and telling lame jokes, often both at the same time

Emily Law PwC     

Emily is a Manager at PwC and begun her career 4 years ago, working predominantly in traditional actuarial roles including reserving, pricing and audit support for large accident compensation schemes and general insurance companies. More recently, she has been involved in government advisory and analytics work, building sophisticated models to present insights to government clients and aid in government social policy setting.

Outside of work, Emily enjoys travelling around the world, hiking outdoors or playing board games paired with cheese and wine.

Bo Jiang Willis Towers Watson    

As a member of the Executive Management team, Bo is responsible for developing business and corporate strategy for Willis Re Australia.
Based in Sydney, Bo also has day-to-day client-facing responsibilities in providing reinsurance modelling, actuarial pricing, and strategic advisory to both life and non-life clients. His experience expands across Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and China markets.

Bo has more than 10 years of experience in the financial services industry. He has been working in reinsurance since 2010. Bo is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and ANZIIF. He has an Executive MBA degree, major in Strategic Management, from Australia Graduate School of Management (UNSW).

Cindy Cheung KPMG 

Cindy is a qualified actuary at KPMG. In the 12 years working in the general insurance industry, she has taken a variety of roles covering personal lines pricing, insurance liability valuation and capital.

Her focus in the most recent years however has been supporting the government and social sector in analytics and understanding reform impacts. The ability to utilise her actuarial skillset to help improve social outcomes is where her passion lies and what she finds to be the most rewarding.
