Volunteering in Action

As part of National Volunteer Week, we shine a spotlight on the dedicated individuals whose contributions make events like the All Actuaries Summit possible.

Pulling back the curtain on this year’s Summit’s organising committee, Council Member Jon Shen and experienced volunteer Martin Mulcare share how contributing to the profession creates ripple effects that benefit us all.

Igniting important conversations

Bringing his expertise and passion to the All Actuaries Summit organising committee, Jon has a clear vision for the profession’s future.

"AI is everywhere. Now more than ever, we need thoughtful conversations on how to develop and manage AI systems that benefit our organisations and society more broadly."

As a Council Member who has contributed significantly to the Institute’s data science and AI strategy and education program, Jon sees the Summit as an opportunity to spark important dialogue. "I'm excited for the upcoming discussions at the Summit. I hope they will inspire actuaries to learn more about the topic, think deeply about the implications, and take action to positively shape our future!"

His enthusiasm for the Summit reflects his broader experience with volunteering. "It's been a hugely rewarding experience for me, both personally and professionally," Jon notes. "Along the way I've learned from and collaborated with amazing peers."

Finding your purpose

Fellow organising committee member Martin Mulcare brings a complementary perspective, shaped by his extensive volunteer experience, currently with the Professionalism Committee and as an Ambassador for the Institute.

"My first response to actuaries contemplating volunteer roles is to be supporting and encouraging," Martin says. "There are many benefits for volunteers, as well as benefits for the profession."

For those considering volunteering, Martin says intention is key to choosing the right opportunity. "I invite actuaries to reflect on the primary purpose of their volunteering as that may guide their choice of role. For example, if their prime motivation is related to their current business role, then I would recommend volunteering in direct connection with their practice area."

Building bridges across the profession

One of the most valuable aspects of volunteering, according to both Jon and Martin, is the opportunity to connect with members from different practice areas.

Through his recent volunteer roles, Martin’s experience has led to unique learning opportunities that allow him to gain valuable insights from actuaries across the spectrum of practice areas.

For Jon, volunteering has allowed him to have a hand in future-proofing the profession. "It's been a privilege to contribute to the Institute’s Data Science and AI strategy, as well as the education program, shaping the path for future actuaries,” he says.

The ripple effect of volunteering

The impact of volunteer contributions extends beyond organising successful events like the All Actuaries Summit.

As Jon and Martin’s experiences demonstrate, volunteering not only influences the direction of our profession and creates valuable connections, it also provides significant opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Highlighting how volunteering broadens one’s perspective on the actuarial field, Martin observes, "I think it is fascinating to reflect on the principles that are common across the profession compared with the practices that may be legitimately different."
