"The actuaries of the future will be the voice leaders seek out when facing uncertainty.”
— Julie Masters
In the lead-up to the 2025 All Actuaries Summit, we speak with this year's keynote speaker, Julie Masters, on the parallels between actuarial trust-building and effective personal branding.
Offering a sneak peek into what attendees can expect, Julie shares practical strategies for professionals to showcase their unique perspectives and ethical reasoning — skills algorithms can't replicate — positioning actuaries as trusted authorities in an AI-driven world.
What will attendees learn at your All Actuaries Summit keynote?
Great question! We'll be diving into why the nature of influence has fundamentally changed in this new world of digital fuel and AI-enablement, including how amplifying your voice as an actuary now holds the key to being seen as a trusted authority.
We'll also be unpacking practical ways to build your personal brand in this new age, including how to find your unique niche as an expert, communicate complex data through powerful stories, and consistently show up as a sought-after “translator” in your field.
This session will be all about actively taking your place as a trusted advisor who is able to not only inform with your insights but compel people to take action.
What parallels do you see between how actuaries build trust as technical experts and the trust-building elements of an effective personal brand?
The way you build trust as an actuary has so much in common with how strong personal brands earn people's confidence.
Think about what makes clients and colleagues trust you right now. I would guess it's when you clearly explain complex risks in ways that make sense in their world, when you become their “go-to person” for specific expertise and when you help “decode” the pathway forward during uncertain times.
These are exactly the same ingredients that make a trustworthy personal brand. The real magic happens in both worlds when you can turn complexity into clarity.
When you can take complex information and transform it into something not just clear, but compelling. The best personal brands don't only provide information – they translate that information into real human insights then package those insights into data-driven stories that motivate people to pay attention.
That’s when you shift from the role of expert to being seen as a trusted and sought-after authority in your field.
Any thoughts on why AI’s growing role in data analytics makes personal branding more, not less, important for actuaries?
From my perspective, the AI revolution hasn't just changed the way we work – it’s transformed our professional identities which makes building a strong personal brand more vital than ever before.
Think about your true value for a moment: sound judgment forged through experience, ethical reasoning that algorithms can't replicate, a unique perspective shaped by your individual journey – and the ability to understand and communicate the business context behind the numbers. Building a personal brand is all about showcasing these strengths.
It’s about positioning yourself as the essential guide and strategic partner. An expert can bring meaning to what AI and technology can only calculate. In that way, personal branding amplifies one of the most impactful dimensions of actuarial work – bringing evidence-based insights to the decisions that matter most.
What excites you most about the potential impact of actuaries who successfully build their authority?
What excites me most is the potential for the actuarial profession to transform from experts into influential voices that shape our most critical decisions.
There is a huge opportunity right now for actuaries who can build a powerful personal brand, successfully combining the best of technology with deep human insight. These are the voices that will stand out in this new age – and become a vital bridge between the data and real-world decisions.
The actuaries of the future will be the voices that leaders seek out when facing uncertainty and translating statistical realities into compelling insights, enabling executives, policymakers and the public, to not only understand the data, but use it to solve some of our most meaningful challenges.
