FACILITATORS

Trang Duncanson has more than 20 years’ experience working with life insurance companies. She has implementation experience across the breadth of actuarial services, in particular regulatory capital, ICAAP, Financial Condition Reporting, actuarial modelling efficiency projects across capital and insurance valuation, and mergers& acquisitions. Trang’s short term focus is on core actuarial services streamlining, outsourced actuarial modelling services, and IFRS 17 implementations. She regularly volunteers to the Institute of Actuaries – she is currently the Chief Editor of Actuaries.Digital, is a member of IFRS 17 taskforce, and is on the organising committee for the Young Actuaries Conference 2017 and the Congress of Actuaries Conference 2022.

Martin Mulcare is an FIAA who is currently enjoying a portfolio of activities where the common theme is that he loves sharing ideas. In Martin’s prior corporate career path, he had more than 25 years’ experience in actuarial and executive roles in the financial services industry. Martin was a member of the Leadership & Career Development Committee until the end of 2015 and wrote “More Than Maths”, a monthly column on communication matters in “Actuary Australia”, for three years. Martin also facilitates the Professionalism Course for the Actuaries Institute.

Peter Corbett is an Associate Director in KPMG’s Actuarial, Insurance and Superannuation practice and specialises in life insurance. He has over 10 years’ experience in consulting and corporate roles in Australia and overseas covering valuation, capital management, risk, pricing and operations.
Avanti Patki is an actuarial graduate working at AMP.  Graduating with a Bachelor of Actuarial Studies and a Bachelor of Science (Statistics) in 2014, Avanti has worked in the life insurance industry for just over two years with experience in wealth management valuations, insurance strategy, asset & liability management as well as actuarial pricing.

Nicolette Rubinsztein  B Bus Sc (Hons) EMBA FIAA GAICD

Nicolette is a Vice President of the Actuaries Institute and a non-executive director in the wealth management industry. She is an experienced senior executive, having held three General Manager roles at CBA/ Colonial First State as well as senior positions at BT Funds Management and Towers Perrin prior to that.

She was a director of ASFA for eight years and chair of its Super System Design Council. For her work in superannuation policy, Nicolette was awarded an ASFA Distinguished Service Award and an inaugural Financial Services Council Industry Excellence Award. She is a UNSW Alumni Leader and is a member of Macquarie University’s Faculty of Business and Economics Industry Advisory Board.

She is author of the book “Not Guilty”, a guide for career mums. 

Raymond Bennett is a Director at Deloitte Australia, with over twenty years of experience in the actuarial profession, mostly in consulting but also including four years of industry experience. He has been qualified as an FIAA since 2002. Ray has worked mainly in life insurance but has experience in other fields including general insurance. He enjoys M&A work and technical actuarial work in particular. Ray has lived all over the world including Australia, Malaysia, United Kingdom and South Africa and has worked in a number of countries as well. Ray has been involved in the actuarial profession and currently volunteers as a specialist lecturer on the online professionalism course for the UK IFOA. Ray enjoys reading, travelling and spending quality time with his wife and two kids.


Anthony Tockar is a data scientist at CBIG Consulting. A jack-of-all-trades, he has worked on problems across insurance, technology, telecommunications, media and even neuroscience. After getting his FIAA with the Actuaries Institute, Anthony completed an MS in Analytics at the prestigious Northwestern University. After hitting the headlines with his posts on data privacy at Neustar, he returned to Sydney to practice as a data scientist and co-founded the Minerva Collective and the Data Science Breakfast Meetup. His key missions are to extend the reach and impact of data science to help people, and to assist Australian businesses to become more data driven.


Darren Robinson was appointed Chief Actuary for MLC Limited in April 2015. In this role he is responsible for the company's pricing, reinsurance, valuation of policy liabilities and management information.

Darren joined NAB in 2013 as Head of Actuarial – Insurance and Management Information, NAB Wealth before being appointed Chief Actuary for MLC Limited in 2015.

Prior to joining NAB, Darren was the Pricing and Valuation Actuary at Clearview, where he designed and supported the implementation of the advice distribution strategy, designed and implemented the reinsurance strategy, was heavily involved in the development of the LifeSolutions Product and extended the reporting capability within the function. Prior to this Darren held senior actuary roles, within the wealth management divisions of Westpac (Valuation & Capital Actuary) and Commonwealth Bank of Australia (Portfolio Actuary – Managed Funds).

Darren is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Actuarial and has a BComm (Hons) from UNSW.


Greg Bird has worked for AMP most of his career, starting as an Actuarial graduate in 2000. He has held various roles in Actuarial, Finance, Risk Management and Strategy, and worked in Australia, New Zealand, India and the UK.

Most recently in AMP New Zealand Greg worked as the General Manager, Strategy and Risk (from 2011 to 2013) and then Chief Actuary (2013 to 2015). He was seconded to act as the Director, Insurance for AMP’s Australian business during 2015 and was then appointed to his current role as CFO, Insurance and Superannuation. This includes finance responsibilities for all of AMP’s life insurance entities.

He is a qualified actuary, and became a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA) in 2003 and Certified Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA) in 2010.

Jas Singh FIAA has over ten year’s actuarial experience working in life insurance, non-life insurance and wealth management, both in Australia and the U.K. He is currently a member of the Commercial Actuarial Practice Faculty and Life Insurance Assessments Project of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. Jas entered actuarial recruitment in 2011 and has established himself as a leading and widely respected consultant in the Australian market.  He is increasingly looking to do more work in Asia given the rapid growth rates in the region.


Marc Mer is manager within Deloitte Actuaries & Consultants, having transferred from Deloitte UK in 2014. He has experience in a wide range of areas including traditional life insurance, reinsurance, banking and general statistical analysis. Marc's recent experience includes work for a couple of large global reinsurance companies where he carried out various statutory and regulatory roles for their Australian subsidiaries. More locally he has managed the EV, business planning and forecasting for Australian life insurers, been part of an independent expert team on an approved Part 9 transfer, as well as carried out due diligence on both life insurance and mortgage lending M&A transactions. Marc has a keen interest in the future of the actuarial profession and insurance industry and is a regular presenter on these topics, as well as being a co-author on the Actuaries Institute Green Paper on the Impact of Big Data on the Future of Insurance.


Alice Truong has over 10 years of life insurance experience within the corporate financial services environment. More recently, she has extended her experience to the human services sector. She is passionate about using her actuarial skills in making a difference by providing actionable insights to drive strategic outcomes.

Alice enjoys playing basketball and volunteering. These give her the opportunity to build relationships, unite different individuals, and drive growth and development of herself and others.

Alice is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries Australia, Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from University of New South Wales.

Kit Ng is the Senior Consultant Actuary at MLC. In her current role she is heavily involved in the valuation of policy liabilities, embedded value reporting, management information and corporate transformation projects. Prior to this senior actuary role, Kit has held various roles across pricing and finance within MLC. Kit is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and holds a BComm (Hons) from the ANU.

Rashi Bansal is currently the Chief Actuary and Head of Finance at BT Financial Group. She is responsible for leading the actuarial and finance team across general insurance and life insurance. She is also the Appointed Actuary for Westpac’s general insurance and lenders mortgage insurance business. Prior to BT, Rashi spent 10 years at Pwc in actuarial consulting specialising in accident compensation. She has nearly 20 years experience in insurance across strategic and operational planning, reporting and analysis, financial control, capital management, statutory reporting and projects.

Zhan Wang is Pricing Actuary at Swiss Reinsurance.  She has 8 years of experience in life insurance – prior to Swiss Re, she worked at MLC and Clearview in various roles, across valuation, pricing, data warehouse and management insights.

Zhan is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and Certified Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA), and has a BComm (Hons) from Macquarie University.

Elizabeth (Liz) Martin is a consulting Actuary who has recently returned to Australia after working in London. Over the past 10 years she has worked with clients across a range of industries and countries; including Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and the UK, specialising in M&A and strategic initiatives. She loves to travel, and would love to be a food and travel writer one day.

Michael Stumbles drives insight into Swiss Re's in force book of business, leading a Portfolio Management team monitoring and reviewing experience to identify emerging risks and opportunities, including transactions. He also leads Swiss Re ANZ's Technical Accounting team, responsible for managing Life and Health business payables, receivables, data management and arising administrative issues. Michael has worked with Swiss Re for more than 3 years. Previously he has worked as the Deputy Appointed Actuary at BT Financial Group, and in consulting as a Director with Deloitte, and at Tillinghast Towers Perrin (now Willis Towers Watson). Michael has lived and worked in Zurich Switzerland, and spent time working on projects in a number of other locations including Tokyo and London. Michael is a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute of Australia, has a Diploma of Financial Planning and has an Honours degree in Mathematics from the University of Sydney.

Jefferson Gibbs is a Senior Partner at KPMG.  He has more than 25 years’ broad actuarial consulting experience specialising in General Insurance.  Jefferson has a passion for steering strategy in new areas which creates opportunity for his clients, team and colleagues.

Jefferson is an experienced presenter and facilitator.  His public speaking experience started with debating where his team reached the NZ quarter finals.  In the equivalent of year 12 Jefferson was a finalist in the high school national public speaking competition. 

Jefferson has worked in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.  He has been involved in projects with insurers in over 20 insurance jurisdictions around the world.  Jefferson works for Government clients as well as private sector clients.  He has a depth of experience as an Appointed Actuary, strategy/policy work, peer review, audit assist, reserving and valuations. 

Jefferson is an active member of his profession. He chaired the General Insurance Practice Committee and was a member of the Public Policy Committee.

Con Asvestas is a senior consultant at Quantium with over 9 years of analytics experience. He first started his career in various general insurance actuarial roles before deciding to switch to a career in analytics.

Con currently leads the Loyalty Analytics team within the retail arm of Quantium. His recent experience involves working on high visibility retail projects ranging from demand forecasting, personalisation, customer segmentations and various customer communication strategies for the Woolworths Rewards program. He is increasingly looking to expand on his extensive experience in customer analytics, and is keen to further develop his knowledge of the data science world. In his spare time, Con enjoys partaking in various treks and mountaineering adventures around the world, which has taken him to some of the most remote regions including Mount Everest and Patagonia.
