See

National Gallery of Australia

  • See Blue Poles at one of Australia’s largest art galleries. Entry to the main galleries is free and there are free highlights tours every day at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm from highly knowledgeable guides.
    View current exhibitions

Australian War Memorial

  • A visit to the Australian War Memorial times perfectly with Remembrance Day (11 November). There is so much to see here that you can lose yourself for a day if you are not careful.

Old Parliament House

  • If you have time, Old Parliament House and New Parliament House are both worth a visit and the Portrait Gallery has just re-opened after a renovation

Do

Questacon

  • Taking the kids? Visit Questacon.

Old Bus Depot Markets

  • The Old Bus Depot Markets is on every Sunday at, you guessed it, the old Bus Depot. This market serves up a variety of food, wine & spirits, locally made clothing, craft and jewellery. The stallholders vary each weekend, so there is always something for everyone. It’s been going for 25 years, so it must be doing something right.

Segway Tour

  • Experience for yourself that all roads in Canberra lead to Parliament House.

Eat

Aubergine

  • For something a little bit fancy, Aubergine is arguably Canberra’s finest restaurant – 2 SMH Hats for the past seven years and listed in Gourmet Travellers top 100.
    Cuisine: contemporary
Open for dinner Monday to Sunday

XO

  • Goumet Traveller reported that the crew at XO are the torchbearers of experimental Asian dining in the national capital. XO also has an impressive wine list put together by a sommelier with great knowledge of the excellent local wines on offer. Bookings essential. Vegetarian friendly.
  • Cuisine: Contemporary Asian

The Griffith Vietnamese Restaurant

  • For something cheaper and cheerful, this is a place both locals and politicians go. The food is fresh and everything you would expect at your local Vietnamese. Entertain yourself reading the walls, which are adorned with recommendations from the many politicians who have visited. It’s BYO and there is a licensed supermarket in the same shopping strip. Vegetarian & Vegan friendly.

Briezh Café

  • This café creperie and patisserie offers very traditional French fare. Open from 9.00am till 4.00pm Wednesday to Saturday (9-3 Sunday). Booking will avoid disappointment.
