Todd Sampson
CEO, Leo Burnett Sydney

Todd is the CEO of Leo Burnett, Australia’s top creative advertising agency. In 2012, they were ranked as the 7th most creative agency in the world and the only Australian company to ever make the top 10. He is the co-creator of the Earth Hour initiative – which has been recognised as one of the best ideas globally with over 1.4 billion people taking part in over 5000 cities. The Financial Review ranked him as one of the most influential leaders in the country. Todd is also the breakout star of the hit ABC television show The Gruen Transfer and a co-host of Channel Ten’s The Project. Outside of work he enjoys mountaineering and has completed an unguided climb to the top of Mount Everest.

Dr John Edwards
Visiting Fellow, Lowy Institute, and Member of the Reserve Bank Board

John Edwards is a Visiting Fellow at the Lowy Institute, an Adjunct Professor with the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy at Curtin University, and a member of the Board of the Reserve Bank of Australia. From 2009 to 2011 he was Director for Economic Planning and Development for the Economic Development Board of the Kingdom of Bahrain. From 1997 to 2009 John was Chief Economist for Australia and New Zealand for the global financial group, HSBC. In 2008 he was given leave of absence from HSBC to accept a secondment to the Australian Treasury as Chief Adviser, Financial Markets. At the same time the Minister for Trade, Simon Crean, appointed John to join chairman David Mortimer AO in a two-member Review of Australian Trade and Investment Policies. From 1991 to 1994 he was principal economic adviser to Treasurer and then Prime Minister, Paul Keating. In that role John had particular responsibility for international trade issues, labour market reform, and monetary policy.

Tony Lally
Chief Executive Officer, Sunsuper

Tony has been CEO of Sunsuper since 2007. He has overseen a number of strategic initiatives including the acquisition of CitiStreet Australia which resulted in the in-sourcing of all administration and member services for the fund. Tony has over 30 years senior executive experience in the insurance, superannuation and wealth management industries in a number of countries. He spent five years based in Japan with Deutsche Bank and Deloitte where he developed and implemented strategic plans for funds management, actuarial and insurance businesses throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Tony was with the Commonwealth Bank for 10 years where he led Australia’s largest retail funds management business. Tony is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (UK), Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, a Chairman of the Board of ASFA and is a member of the ASFA Policy Committee. He has presented papers at a number of international pension fund conferences and is co-author of a paper on Industry Funds in Australia.

Brian Bissaker
CEO, Colonial First State Investments

Brian joined Colonial First State in 2002 and was promoted to Chief Executive Officer in 2006. Prior to this, he spent eight years at BT Funds Management where he was an Executive Vice President and Head of Product. Brian commenced his career as a taxation and superannuation consultant at KPMG servicing the finance, funds management and superannuation industries. He has extensive experience in dealing with Government and industry bodies on policy and technical superannuation and savings issues. Brian is the Deputy Chairman of the Financial Services Council (FSC) and co-chairs the FSC Super Board Committee. He is a former director of the Australian Superannuation Funds Association (ASFA) Board. Brian holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from Sydney University and is a Chartered Accountant. He has also completed the International Executive Program at INSEAD, France.

Debby Blakey
Deputy CEO, HESTA Super Fund

Debby was appointed to the role of Deputy CEO at HESTA in January 2012, prior to which she was Executive Manager – Member Advice from September 2008. She brings more than 20 years experience in superannuation and financial planning to HESTA. Debby started her career working on defined benefit mergers and valuations for a consulting actuarial practice in South Africa, before setting up her own business as an employee benefit consultant with a particular focus on superannuation. She has previous retail and industry fund experience in business development, operational management and member advice, and is passionate about delivering quality advice to members who have historically not had access to cost-effective advice. Debby holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Natal, South Africa, is a Certified Financial Planner™ practitioner, and a Fellow of The Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees.

Marc Lieberman
Chief Executive Officer, MetLife Australia

Marc Lieberman is Chief Executive Officer of MetLife’s Australian business. As CEO, he is responsible for all aspects of MetLife’s Australian business with a strong focus on driving profitable long term growth. Marc joined MetLife in April 2010 and under his leadership, the focus will be to drive a customer service and value driven organisation. With 25 years experience in financial services, Marc has extensive experience in delivering high growth results through his strong leadership in his capacity as CEO. Prior to joining MetLife, Marc was President and CEO of Hartford Life Limited based in Ireland with offices in London and Frankfurt. He was responsible for the European business of The Hartford Group, one of the largest US based Life Insurance companies. Prior to this, he held the role of CEO of ING New Zealand, one of New Zealand’s largest non-bank financial service organisations. In both these roles, Marc was accountable for managing all operations within the region and country respectively. In addition to his experience of managing country and regional businesses, he has worked extensively across the United States in various senior roles, mainly focused on distribution and sales. Marc holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Studies, Buffalo State College and has held various Directorships of Industry Affiliations including Vice Chair of the ISI, New Zealand’s leading financial services association.

Pauline Blight-Johnston
Managing Director, RGA Reinsurance Company of Australia

Pauline Blight-Johnston, Managing Director of RGA Reinsurance Company of Australia Limited is responsible for RGA’s business in Australia and New Zealand. She has over 18 years of actuarial and financial management experience in the life insurance industry, both in Australia and internationally. Prior to joining RGA in 2007, Pauline was Chief Financial Officer and Appointed Actuary for Asteron Life. Before then, she was a consulting actuary with Tillinghast and an investment banker with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. Pauline has a Bachelor’s and a Master of Economics degree from Macquarie University, and a graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute of Australia. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, a Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa, a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance and a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australia. She is currently a Director of the Financial Services Council and the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance and has previously served on many committees of the Financial Services Council and the Actuaries Institute.

Alex Twigg
General Manager, UBank

After 12 years in retail banking and mortgage lending in the UK Alex joined the Egg Bank launch team in 2000. In 2004, Santa Fe, Egg’s next generation banking platform subsidiary was acquired by Keane Inc and Alex lead his team to New York to create Keane’s Customer Experience Technology Practice, helping to shape the direct banking and delivery strategies of Fidelity, Citigroup, Etrade plus many other Fortune 500 clients. In Jan 2008 Alex brought his wife and three children to Australia, to leverage his experience and co-ordinate the launch of NAB’s direct banking arm UBank, which he now heads up.

Melanie Evans
Head of Superannuation & Platforms, BT Financial Group

Melanie Evans has recently been appointed to the role of Head of Superannuation and Platforms at BT Financial Group. She is responsible for a business portfolio spanning Corporate Super, Retail Super & Investments, BT Super for Life as well as the Asgard & BT Wrap Platforms. Prior to this appointment, Melanie was BT's Head of Superannuation. She has also headed up BT's Personal Super business, where she successfully spearheaded the launch and distribution of BT's innovative and award-winning online superannuation product, BT Super for Life. At BT, Melanie has also held other roles including Head of Brand and Head of Group Marketing. Prior to joining BT in 2003, she worked at Westpac in a number of roles in the retail bank and also spent several years at St George Bank. Melanie sits on the FSC Superannuation Board and Chairs the MySuper Working Group. She holds a Master of Commerce and Master of Professional Accounting from the University of New South Wales.

Paul Barrett
General Manager, Advice & Distribution, ANZ Wealth

Paul Barrett has over 17 years experience working in banking and wealth management and is currently the General Manager of Advice & Distribution for ANZ Wealth. Prior to this he was the General Manager of Colonial First State Advice Business. In this role Paul was responsible for the Commonwealth Financial Planning (CFP), BW Financial Advice, Financial Wisdom, Whittaker Macnaught and Advice Essentials dealer groups, and the related dealer support areas. Prior to this role, he was the General Manager Colonial First State Distribution which included responsibility for distribution, corporate superannuation, CFS products and services to the IFA market, the Financial Wisdom and Whittaker Macnaught dealer groups and dealerships services. From March 2004 to October 2006 Paul was General Manager for Financial Wisdom (FWL) and was responsible for ongoing operations and the development and execution of FWL's strategic plan. Prior to joining the CBA group, Paul was Head of Wealth Management for Fiducian Portfolio Services where he was responsible for the franchise adviser network, the salaried adviser channel, the 'dealer to dealer' business and platform sales. He has 17 years of financial services experience including time on the funds management, client service, and administration front, he also worked for Rothschild and ANZ during this time. Paul is married to Sarah, has two sons Oliver and Carter and enjoys motorsports, martial arts and playing the guitar.

Michael Pennisi
Chief Officer Strategy and Product Development, QSuper

Michael Pennisi has over 22 years experience in the Australian financial services sector having commenced his career with one of Australia’s largest financial services firms. During his career, he has held senior executive positions with some of Australia’s largest superannuation funds, fund managers and financial planning firms and has experience across both the private and public sector, including a role with the Insurance and Superannuation Commission. Michael has been an active contributor to industry associations and has held State executive positions for ASFA and is a former member of the FSC Global Markets Board Committee.

Richard Howes
Chief Executive, Challenger, Life

Richard Howes is Chief Executive, Challenger Life. He has overall executive responsibility for the management of Challenger Life, an APRA-regulated life insurance company. Challenger Life is the foremost annuity provider in Australia with an investment portfolio valued at in excess of $8.25 billion backing annuity policies held by 60,000 Australian retirees. Richard joined Challenger in June 2003 from Zurich Capital Markets where he was responsible for the derivatives franchise that provided risk management solutions to major companies and institutions globally. Prior to that time he was a managing director in the Commodities business at Macquarie Bank, based in Chicago. Richard also spent six years at Bankers Trust within the financial markets group in including as an Executive Vice President overseeing various trading and risk books. He started his career at Queensland Investment Corporation in portfolio optimisation and return attribution. Richard has a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland.

Chris Ryan
Former head of Asian and Australian Investment Management Companies

Chris Ryan has worked in financial services for more than 30 years, with almost half of his career outside Australia in senior management positions in Asia. Most recently, he was CEO and Managing Director for Perpetual Limited in Sydney, Prior to that, he was Head of Asia for Fidelity International Limited, based in Hong Kong and before that he was CEO of ING Investment Management Asia Pacific, also based in Hong Kong. He has extensive experience across all Asian markets, including China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan and Dubai. He established the first Chinese joint venture fund management company in 2001 and in addition to his investment management company experience, has also been a director of a number of Asian life insurance companies.

Andrew Gale
Former CEO & Managing Director, Count Financial

Andrew Gale was Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer of Count Financial Limited up until December 2011. Count Financial Limited (Count) is Australia’s largest franchised network of financial planning/wealth accountants and advisers with around $14 billion of clients’ funds and loans under advice. Count was acquired by CBA in December 2011. Andrew has over 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry, including leadership of Deloitte Actuaries & Consultants and senior executive roles with two of Australia's leading financial services organisations, namely MLC and AMP. He is active in industry and regulatory issues, including recent roles as a member of the FSC Advice Board Committee and Chair of the Accountant Financial Adviser Coalition (AFAC). Andrew has also been strongly involved in the actuarial profession over many years including Council (1997, 2000-5), Executive Committee (2003–2005) and President (2005). He established the Institute’s Leadership Committee and had a lead role in establishing the Step Up leadership program. Andrew qualified as an actuary in 1981. He completed his MBA in 1984 and was awarded MGSM Allen Knott Memorial Medal for highest academic excellence in the MBA program. Andrew is currently enjoying a short sabbatical.

Tony Davis
Director, Quantium

Tony Davis leads many of Quantium’s marketing, media and customer analytics programs and partnerships. With a background in marketing and strategy at financial services firms including NatWest in the UK, Aussie Home Loans, and a wide range of financial services clients since joining Quantium 10 years ago, Tony has strong experience in the sector. Quantium has a very clear picture of how the digital world is affecting the Australian landscape. This includes the impact of digital strategies in customer acquisition, tracking the competitive environment and driving new levels of customer engagement.

Dick Morath
Chairman, GWM Advisor Services

Dick is Chairman of the Advice & Licences Boards and all Financial Planning companies in NAB / MLC in Australia, and of the Compliance Committee for all NAB / MLC dealerships. He is a Director of MLC Nominees, is the trustee for all the superannuation business of MLC; Chairman of Plum, the MLC group vehicle providing member services to the large corporate superannuation market; and Director PFS Nominees, the Plum Trustee. Dick is also Chairman of National Australia Trustees, part of the National’s Private Bank. He is Chair of NAB Health Advisory Council, (advisory board to the NAB Health business, which is part of the Business Bank); Director of JANA Investment Advisors Limited; Director of BNZ Life and Director of ASX listed Platinum Capital Limited and Chair of that company’s audit committee. Dick holds a BA, is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries-London and Australia and an Associate of the Securities Institute of Australia.  

Greg d’Arville
Principal, crgESSENTIALS

Greg d’Arville is an educator, journalist and marketer with over twenty-five years of compliance, governance and risk management experience. He delivers training, audit and consultancy services to board members, executives and their direct reports through his Melbourne-based company crgESSENTIALS. Greg has advised numerous companies and government business enterprises on governance, strategy and risk issues. His skill set is derived from professional studies in law (at ANU), drama (Nimrod Theatre), marketing and economics (at Deakin University). Before establishing his business Greg held senior positions at the Tax Office and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. He is a Director of St Martins Youth Arts Centre, holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance. He is an AICD Fellow and a Member of Chartered Secretaries Australia (“CSA”), the Australasian Compliance Institute (“ACI”), the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (“MEAA”) and the Risk Management Institution of Australasia (“RMIA”).
