Elizabeth Baker
Chief Financial Officer, Gen Re Australia and New Zealand

Elizabeth has worked for more than 30 years in the financial services industry in Australia, Europe and Asia. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA), a CPA and holds a Masters of Applied Finance.

Prior to joining Gen Re, she worked as an independent consultant, at Hollard, EY, CommInsure and was the Appointed Actuary for CMLA.

Before returning to Australia in 2013, Elizabeth worked internationally for 15 years in Europe, Japan and the Asia Regional office in Singapore for the AXA Group, in a range of senior Actuarial, Risk and Finance roles across a number of insurance and reinsurance businesses. She has extensive operational experience in Finance, Capital Management, Actuarial, Risk Management and Strategy.

Elizabeth is the Chair of the Institute of Actuaries’ Risk Management Practice Committee.

Daniel Yu Lap Cheng

Daniel Yu Lap Cheng (Secretary)
Group Portfolio Management Actuary, TAL

Daniel is a Portfolio Management Actuary from TAL, with a great passion for enterprise risk management. During his previous role in Deloitte, Daniel was an actuarial consultant with experience in designing and maintaining Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), as well as managing financial and non-financial risk for banking, insurance and superannuation clients. 

Daniel is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA), holds the designation of Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuaries (CERA) and the certificate of Financial Risk Manager (GARP). He is a current member of the Actuaries Institute, supporting the Risk Management Practice Committee, Risk Management Faculty, Retirement Strategy Working Group and Disability Insurance Taskforce Working Group.

Gaurav Agrawal
Head of Risk Advisory, MLC Life Insurance

Gaurav is a Risk Actuary with over 10 years' regulatory, consulting and industry experience across the general and life insurance and wealth management industries. Gaurav's key focus areas encompass strategy, governance, risk and capital management and business partnering.

As the Head of Risk Advisory at MLCL, Gaurav leads a team of risk professionals responsible for setting, implementing and enhancing the business’ existing risk management frameworks and risk appetite to align and deliver on the risk strategy across the material risk classes.

Prior to joining MLCL, Gaurav has worked in roles at Allianz Life Insurance, Ernst & Young, Rice Warner Actuaries and APRA with experience across regulation and supervision, risk and capital management, independent reviews, benchmarking and group insurance tender management.

Gaurav is a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA), Associate of the Institute of Actuaries Australia (AIAA) and Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designation holder. He is also a member of the Actuaries Institute University Accreditation Panel, a sub-committee of the Council's Education Strategy Committee (ESC).

  Ashutosh Bhalerao
Appointed Actuary, ClearView Life Assurance Ltd

Ash has 20 years experience in the financial services industry, specialising in life insurance. He has a wide range of experience including risk management, capital management, financial reporting, asset liability management, product pricing and reinsurance. Prior to ClearView, Ash was the Appointed Actuary for Swiss Re Life And Health Australia and has also held other senior actuarial roles in TAL, Challenger and AMP. Ash is also a member of the LIWMPC.

Iain Bulcraig Iain Bulcraig
SCOR Global Life Australia, Chief Risk Officer

Iain is Chief Risk Offer at SCOR Australia having previously had a 2-year secondment in Paris within SCOR reinsurance, supporting its IFRS 17 implementation. In total, Iain has over 25 years of life insurance experience across consulting, insurance and reinsurance firms, both in Australia and his native Scotland. Until his European secondment, Iain was the Chief Financial Officer for SCOR Australia/NZ and been involved in Institute committees for many years.

Iain has also focused strongly on people-initiatives, especially mentoring of other actuaries and he is a qualified Ethics teacher, bringing this learning to primary school children each week.

Paul Caputo
Head of Risk Consulting and Technology Australia and New Zealand, Willis Towers Watson

A financial services executive with over 30 years experience with expertise in risk, finance, and leading and transforming teams. A specialist in life insurance, general insurance and mortgage insurance within Australia and Asia and is passionate about driving risk management as a key competitive proposition within organisations.

A broad range of professional experience which includes heading up the Australian risk and actuarial consulting business for Willis Towers Watson, Chief Risk Officer and Chief Executive for a large insurer, CFO and establishing a start-up life company in Thailand. This experience provides a unique balance of strong commercial acumen together with a deep understanding of building and driving effective risk management within organisations.

A proven ability to manage and influence a diverse range of stakeholders including senior management, regulators and government bodies, rating agencies and company boards.

 
Emily Chong

Emily Chong
Pricing Manger, Tools & Analytics, Suncorp

Emily is an experienced actuary with a deep understanding of General Insurance Pricing and Data Analytics. She loves driving strategic projects and implementing data driven initiatives in collaboration with different functions of an organisation. Emily is a skilled communicator who is able to present complex information in a clear and concise manner to a wide range of audience.

Emily is familiar with advance analytic techniques, modern technology platforms and data governance. Her expertise in data analytics allows her to identify potential risks and opportunities within complex dataset.

Emily also has a keen interest in mentoring actuarial graduates and data analysts.

Martin Considine
Appointed Actuary, Challenger Life Company Limited

Martin has over 30 years experience in the Australian, Irish and Italian life insurance industries predominantly in the valuation and capital management areas.
Martin has been a member of the education sub-committee for ERM since 2009 and been a member of the RMPC since 2019.

He is 1 of 2 representatives of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia on the Global CERA Review Panel and is currently the independent examiner for the ERM examination.
Clare Hughes Clare Marshall
Public Policy & Practice Excellence Adviser, Actuaries Institute

Clare is a member of the Public Policy and Practice Excellence team at the Institute. Clare has a background in strategic communications including Investor Relations, Government Relations and Internal Communications and has experience in financial services and real estate investment trusts (REITs). Clare has a Bachelor of Business (Banking & Finance).

Akalya Jatheendran

Akalya Jatheendran
Principal Analyst, Insurance Supervision, APRA

Akalya is an experienced risk professional with nearly 15 years of experience spanning the general insurance and banking industries, having held various roles at APRA and Suncorp Group across operational risk, insurance risk and capital management.

Akalya has extensive experience in stakeholder management including senior management and at board level and in the development and oversight of risk, governance and capital management frameworks. Akalya is currently a Principal Analyst in APRA’s Insurance Division, focusing on the frontline supervision of general insurers. 

Tin Long Ho

Tin Long Ho
Head of Finance, Complete Credit Solutions

Tin is a self-driven and initiative-taking individual with multiple years of experience in the banking and consulting industry, focusing on credit risk and model risk. He holds a PhD in Risk & Actuarial Studies from UNSW and is an AIAA. Currently, he is the Head of Finance at Complete Credit Solutions.

In his previous role at Macquarie Group, he works in the model risk area where he leads a team to validate risk models in multiple areas, including credit, market, and liquidity risks for regulatory/economic capital, provisioning, and stress testing.

Before joining Macquarie, he was a manager at ING Australia, where he developed credit risk models for regulatory capital and an "Early Warning System" to monitor the credit risk of the retail mortgage portfolio.  

While he worked at Deloitte, he led a team on auditing and developing IFRS9 credit risk provisioning modelling for multiple clients.

Clement Peng Clement Peng
Causal Academic, University of Sydney Business School

Clement is currently teaching Business Law and Finance at the University of Sydney Business School. He has worked for the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority for over 10 years, with his experience spanning across the insurance and banking industries, having held various roles at Data Analytics, supervision, strategy and performance.

Clement is an Associate of the Institute of Actuaries Australia (AIAA) and Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS). He is also a member of the Climate and Sustainability Working Group (CSWG), and completing his Doctor of Philosophy degree at the Macquarie University.

GiriVaratharajan Giri Varatharajan
Senior Risk Specialist – Insurance Risk, APRA

Giri is an experienced actuary who has worked in the superannuation and life insurance industries. Having started his career in Sydney, he spent over 20 years in the UK where he was responsible for a multi-disciplined team providing actuarial advice, benefit consultancy and administration services for a number of corporate pension schemes. During this time, he advised several pension trustee boards on the development of their risk and governance frameworks.

On returning to Australia, Giri worked in the pricing team at CommInsure and before joining the Insurance Risk Team at APRA in 2018. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia as well as the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.


Srikar_Velivela Srikar Velivela
Executive Manager – Finance, Performance & Advice, Suncorp Group

Srikar is an Executive Manager of Finance, Performance & Advice at Suncorp Group.

He is an experienced leader with roles spanning Insurance, Reinsurance, Banking & Wealth sectors in Finance, Capital, Risk Management, Investments, and Actuarial practice areas. With over 10 years of industry experience, he is well-versed in building effective professional relationships with key stakeholders and has proven capability as a trusted advisor to senior management and the Board.

Srikar is the lead on General Insurance Risks for the RMPC. He has also proactively contributed to the development of the ERM subject as part of the Risk Management Education Committee (RMEC) and is driven to foster continuous learning and development opportunities for his peers in the profession.

 
Yankai Wang

Yankai Wang
Analytics Leader, Vice President, Marsh

Yankai is a general insurance actuary with a demonstrated history of working in consulting and corporate environment. His expertise spans insurance liability valuation, technical pricing, capital management, and (re)insurance optimisation.

Currently at Marsh, Yankai is the practice leader of actuarial engagements and manages a team of professionals to deliver quality actuarial advice to clients based in Australia, Singapore, and Europe. Yankai is also the IFRS 17 APAC Lead at Marsh.

Prior to joining Marsh, Yankai worked at PwC and Suncorp, with a focus on credit risk quantification for major Australian banks under IFRS 9, and workers compensation valuation for privately underwritten schemes.

Yankai is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries Australia (FIAA) and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA). He is also a member of the Risk Management Practice Committee (RMPC) and a marker of Actuary and Fellowship subjects.

Xiao Xu
Lecturer, UNSW

Xiao is a Lecturer in the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies and the Academic Mentor for the Actuarial Society of UNSW. Her research interests centre around variable annuities, retirement planning and artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning. Xiao lectures various actuarial and risk management courses in UNSW.

Before joining UNSW, Xiao had three years of industry work experience in life insurance, consulting business and VC entrepreneurship. Xiao holds several professional qualifications: Chartered Financial Analyst, Chartered Accountant - Australia, Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, Certified Public Accountant – USA, Financial Risk Manager (2016), Fellow of Society of Actuaries and Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst.

Peter Yeates 
Director, Analytic Partners

Peter has nearly 20 years’ experience, principally as an actuarial consultant, across general insurance (including serving as CRO of a Lloyd’s syndicate), health and wider fields. He has worked in New Zealand, the UK and Australia. Peter is a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA) and is also chair of the RMPC Education subcommittee and co-chair of the Cyber Insurance Working Group.

Vice President, Senior Risk Manager - A&NZ, Swiss Re

Jason is currently a Senior Risk Manager at Swiss Re, guiding and supporting the effective operation of business strategy, local risk management framework, capital, sustainability and risk mindsets of the A&NZ business. 

Jason is a business leader and a qualified actuary with more than 10 years of experience and knowledge in Pricing, Data Analytics and Risk Management. A professional and pragmatic individual with a proven track record to problem solving and simplifying the complex. With a focus to empower decision making through data driven insights. A well-regarded leader, mentor and strategic thinker. 

Jason is currently the chair of the Risk Management Education Faculty and a member of the Risk Management Practice Committee.
