Funding

The cornerstone of the Institute’s research effort is the Research Project Fund, which drives the Australian Actuarial Research Grants Program and the Australian Actuarial Research Contracts Program.

Australian Actuarial Research Grants

The grants support leading-edge research projects:

  • in areas of strategic need for the profession, where outcomes from the research are expected to fill gaps in the professions intellectual and knowledge base and/or significantly advance its image and reputation.
  • proposed by less experienced researchers who, in the opinion of the Research Council Committee (RCC), could benefit from further support for their research at this time. It is expected these could include practitioners with expanding research interests.

The research areas referred to are determined each year by the RCC in consultation with practice committees and the university actuarial groups.

Priority areas and research grant recipients are determined in the year prior to the date of project commencement.

Australian Actuarial Research Contracts

Research contracts are intended to support applied research on projects with more closely defined topics than those for research grants. These research contracts support projects aimed at applying, developing and adapting methods and knowledge to improve skills and create tools for use in actuarial practice.

This should help the profession address the actuarial, risk management and related problems that will be encountered in Australia's increasingly complex financial and strategic situation.

Annual project topics eligible for research contracts are determined by the RCC in consultation with practice committees.

Application forms for Australian Actuarial Research Contracts will be available online mid 2010.
