Enrolment in April 2010 Part I Examination

Candidates enroling in Part I exams should think very carefully before entering for an examination. The current cost of sitting each exam is approximately A$535.00. The actual cost varies for each examination, as the cost is based on the exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the English pound sterling at the relevant time. Actual costs are listed on the application form.

Institute candidates must not apply directly to the IoA (London) for examination entry. Also, if candidates inadvertently complete an entry form designed for members of the IoA (London) and send it direct to the UK their application will not be accepted.

Enrolments must be received by the Institute office by the closing date stated previously, and accompanied by the appropriate fee. All on-line entries are acknowledged by the Institute by email. However, it is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that an acknowledgment is received as late entries or amendments will not be accepted under any circumstances after the closing date. Receipts for all entry fees received are issued by the Institute. After the closing date, all entry fees are then remitted to the IoA (London). The IoA (London) does not permit refunds or transfer of funds to the next exam sitting after the closing date, except in special circumstances.

Approximately two to four weeks before the date of the first exam, candidates will receive a letter from the Institute (if sitting the exam in Sydney or Melbourne) or a letter from the exam supervisor in their city/country (if sitting the exam in locations other than Sydney and Melbourne). The letter will contain the following:

Ø       instructions to candidates

Ø       advice on times and venues for the exams; (N.B. All Sydney and Melbourne exams start at 9.30 am and 2.00 pm)

Ø       an attendance permit, which must be brought into the examination room by the candidate for identification purposes.

Please note that, in Sydney and Melbourne, the Institute office acts as the exam supervisor for the IoA (London) exams. In all other cities and countries, a local exam supervisor is nominated by the IoA (London).

It is the personal responsibility of candidates to ensure that their entry application and payment has been received before the closing date. This includes candidates who forward their forms to the company account for payment. Candidates are advised to contact the Institute of Actuaries of Australia before the closing date to confirm receipt.

Applications received after the closing date will not be accepted. Candidates are advised, in their own interests, to submit entry applications well in advance of the closing date. No allowance will be made for any errors or omissions by candidates, employer or other person, by the postal authorities or failure if transmission by fax. This rule will be strictly enforced.

Confirmation of entry
For those students who have submitted a form, an electronic confirmation will be sent to each student with a valid email address once the exam entry has been processed, usually within 3-5 working days, although in some cases this may not be until after the exam entry closing date.

Fees
Candidates must pay the examination fee at the time of application. Entry applications without a valid payment will not be processed. Candidates paying by bank transfer must ensure that the amount arrives in our bank account before the specified closing date.

Entry changes
Candidates must ensure that their entry application is completed with the correct examination(s) and centre location. Changes to exam entries will not be accepted after the closing date for any reason.

Exam centres
Candidates must specify the centre at which they intend to sit. Candidates who wish to sit at a centre not listed in the entry instructions are advised to contact the Institute of Actuaries of Australia before the closing date specified in the exam entry instructions. Requests made subsequently for an alternative centre cannot be considered. Applications indicating a centre not shown as available will not be processed unless this location has been agreed with the Institute of Actuaries of Australia in advance.

Mitigating Circumstances

With examination entries totalling approximately 11,000 at each examination session, we understand that some of you may sit examinations in difficult personal circumstances including:

Ø  your own illness or that of close family members

Ø  bereavement within your close circle of family/friends

Ø  some other material facts

Candidates who believe that their examination performance has been affected by mitigating circumstances may notify the Exams Team if they want their circumstances in which they sat their exam taken into account when their script is being marked.

Candidates who have applied for special arrangements may not apply for mitigating circumstances for the same reason.

Applications must consist of a completed application form, an explanatory covering letter and supporting documentation such as a medical certificate or doctor’s note. All applications must be clearly titled Mitigating Circumstances and must be sent separately from any other applications or correspondence.

Ongoing conditions

Candidates requiring special arrangements because of disability, dyslexia, RSI and long term injury must inform the Institute of Actuaries of Australia when they first submit an entry application.

In order to set up appropriate arrangements we would ask students to submit their applications a minimum of two weeks before the closing date. Please ensure the medical evidence or report is provided at least three weeks before the start of the examinations, and in cases of dyslexia also includes the recommendation given for extra time.

Applications will be kept on file and the same arrangements will be made for each subsequent entry as long as candidates indicate this is still required. If any changes to the current arrangements are required, candidates must inform the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and provide supporting documentation as above.

The Profession reserves the right to contact those students requiring special arrangements on a periodic basis to obtain up to date medical information.

Single occasions
If special arrangements are required for a single occasion, e.g. broken hand, wrist, etc. candidates are requested to inform us as soon as possible as we may still be able to make suitable arrangements. Regrettably, we cannot accommodate any requests for special arrangements received less than one week before the examinations.

  • Incident/emergency – police or fire certificate

  • Event on same day - wedding, holiday, business meeting, etc.
  • Moving house
  • Did not receive entry permit
